To cultivate fruit and ornamental trees, flowers and vegetables in the backyard was a tradition of settlers, which ensured healthy food and quality of life for the family.
In order to bring back this tradition and return to the people some of the regional flavours, ArcelorMittal Vega launched, in September 2005, the project Colours and Flavours from São Francisco do Sul, integrating with the Arbour Day commemorative activities. Five thousand tangerines and Yellow Ipês seedlings were distributed to various communities of the municipality. The seedlings were grown in ArcelorMittal Vega's nursery by students of Casa Familiar Sea (Home of the Sea), from seeds collected in the region, completely adapted to the local climate and soil.
The initiative was very well received by the community and the project will continue in 2006 with the donation of other fruit tree seedlings.
